Juan runs the recycling center in Porterville. His grass is still green as he waters his lawn with the water left over from their washing machine. He informed me that one load of laundry equates to 50 gallons of water. With each load, he fills a large garbage bin with the left over water redirected through a hose connected to the machine. He then fills a 5 gallon bucket to water the lawn. It takes 20 buckets to cover it entirely.
Due to the rise in the price of water, he and his wife save water by ensuring their two daughters shower simultaneously and turn the faucet off when they're not using it. "It's not a lot of work. Just turn it off and on. You can save a lot that way."
